Family-Friendly Giant Dog Breeds

Some of the most recognizable and hard-working breeds are giant dogs. They can be difficult to manage, though, because many of them still exhibit the strong working impulses and desires they were bred for.

1 - Great Dane

Great Dane

This gorgeous animal might be described as having more in common with a tiny horse than a dog. In a crowd, Great Danes stand out. Its temperament, not its appearance or size in this case, is what makes it a great friend. These dogs are typically calm, fun-loving, sociable, and highly devoted. They may look silly because of their size, but what makes them entertaining are their bigger limbs and plop-anywhere attitude.

2 - Mastiff

Mastiff

These large guard dogs are highly protective of their own human family and proclaim "intruders" with a thunderous bark. They are massive and gentle, with a hefty amount of devotion and loyalty. The American Kennel Club (AKC) claims that mastiffs can communicate with their large, expressive eyes and are skilled at understanding human facial emotions and body language.

3 - Leonberger

Leonberger

A Leonberger, which has a mane resembling a lion's, makes an excellent guard and versatile working dog. The Leonberger was first created as a companion dog for European nobility, unlike many other big breeds. Nowadays, Leonbergers make devoted pets and are excellent cart or draught dogs.

4 - Bernese Mountain Dog

They were bred by farmers in their native Switzerland and make good drafting and hauling dogs since they are adaptable, hardworking, and thrive in the cold. Popular and stout companion and family dogs, Bernese Mountain Dogs are noted for their outgoing personalities.

5 - St. Bernard

St. Bernard

Saint Bernards have a shedding factor as well as a drooling element. These large, cuddly oafs have a lot of drool, but they more than compensate for it with their wonderfully lovely, serene demeanor. The distinctive coat colors of Saint Bernards are white, brown, and black. They are tall and thick, enjoy being around people, and make excellent pets for young children. It's understandable that they would have consistent watchdog inclinations after spending decades serving as rescue dogs in the Alps.

Bullmastiff

To create a strong dog that could fend off poachers, breeders combined the mastiff and the bulldog in the middle of the 19th century. The bullmastiff of today is still a reliable watchdog and cherished friend. Despite having a fairly menacing appearance, this giant is kind and loyal to its family.

7 - Black Russian Terrier

Black Russian Terrier

They are as bright as they are imposing, these big terriers. In order to create a powerful security dog, the Soviet Union created the Black Russian Terrier in the 1930s. These protective behaviors are still present in the dogs, and they continue to be extremely loyal to their owners and frequently reserved around strangers.

8 - Boerboel

Boerboel

This broad and blocky large dog breed, often called the "farmer's dog," has historical roots that go back to the 1600s. Because of its imposing stature at the time, the Boerboel was perfect for defending homes and farms. However, they don't behave like hyper dogs who jump up and down at the least provocation; instead, they are incredibly composed and self-assured. Boerboels even have a soft place for kids because they are so devoted and loyal to their families and like spending time with them. However, dog parks might not be the best place to bring your Boerboel because they typically don't have much patience for canines who confront them. Newfoundland

Newfoundlanders will demonstrate their affection to whomever they can. These huge dogs have kind hearts, are kind with children, and are lively with other animals. Just enough activity is required to maintain a healthy weight for newbies. These dogs are reputed to be great swimmers, according to the American Kennel Club, and one even accompanied Lewis and Clark on their 1802 journey across America.

10 -
Dogue de Bordeaux

Dogue de Bordeaux

A cute, slobbery dog, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a great companion. This enormous dog breed, which has a huge head and appears aggressive, is actually quite loving and devoted. It acts as a capable guard dog and is protective of its family. The French mastiff is another name for this breed, which has its roots in France.
