Betta Fish Facts for Beginners

Betta fish (Siamese fighting fish) are recognized for their unbelievable beauty and warrior-like temperament, but there are certain facts about bettas that make them fascinating pets. Dig deeper into this fish's world and learn a number of its secrets with these shocking betta fish facts.

1 - While they sleep, some betta fish lose color.

It doesn't necessarily indicate that your betta is ill if he has lost his vibrant color; he could simply be sleeping. When sleeping, many attractive fish, along with the betta, lose the brightness of their colors. It's interesting to note that some betta fish may lose their color while dozing off as a natural protection mechanism (although others lose their color due to injury, old age, illness, or stress). Betta fish lie down in a variety of positions, including straight up, on their sides, or with their head lowered.

2 -  Males raise the babies.

The male betta fish will make a little bubble nest on the water's surface when it's time to breed and produce many more cute, newborn betta fishes. Then, to protect the eggs until they hatch, he will keep an eye on the nest, make any necessary repairs, and collect any that drift away. Another surefire indication that you have a healthy, content male betta in your sights is the construction of a bubble nest.

3 - Betta fish can survive for days without food.

Experts recommend feeding pet Betta fish at least two pellets twice daily. In water, pellets expand and provide a hearty meal for your betta. At least twice a week, fresh or preserved food may be given in place of their pellet meals. Be aware that certain Betta fish can survive for days without food. Contact your veterinarian or the staff at a pet store before leaving your pet unsupervised for a long time, though, as there are a few situations you should keep in mind.

4 - Jumping is possible with Betta fish.

Betta fish are not only great swimmers, but they are also powerful jumpers! Bettas may typically jump up to 3 inches high if kept in an open aquarium. It's important to keep in mind that a tank with poor water quality can worry your poor betta to the point where they try to escape by leaping out of the tank. For reference, bettas do best in a tank that has at least 5 gallons of warm, slightly acidic water (pH range: 6.8–7.5), which is changed frequently.

5 - Bettas relish resting spots.

Betta

Bettas, like most fish, sleep a lot. Bettas also enjoy resting on the bottom of their tanks or at the top of the water line. Sometimes, homeowners may even see them floating peacefully at the top of the tank and believe they're dead; however, a healthy Betta in this position is simply resting. A favorite resting spot of bettas is on leaves, plants, rocks, or maybe ornaments placed within the tank. If you suction-cup a synthetic leaf to the top of the tank, you will almost certainly see your betta resting there.

6 - Bettas will breathe on top of and below the water.

Unlike most fish, Betta fish will breathe air! They will even protrude from a fish tank. They need a labyrinth bladder, permitting them to require air from above the water’s surface.

7 - Betta fish have a five-year life span.

They often live for two to five years. Between four and twelve months is when betta fish are most fertile. Owners will have greater success with younger betta fish since older ones could pass on "bad genetics," even if older fish can still procreate. Owners must take into account their size when mating them (they should roughly be the same size) or the female should be somewhat smaller than the male.

8 - Male Bettas are extremely territorial.

When you visit an aquarium store, you will notice that bettas are typically displayed in tiny, individual containers. If you see one in a very crowded tank, it's probably the only one of its kind. That is as a result of the fact that bettas are extremely territorial toward each other and that they can fight to the death to defend their territory, if necessary. Bettas do not seem to be quite as territorial toward different species; however, they'll still nip their tank mates sometimes.

9 - Their tails aren't identical.

This initial truth could appear very odd, but the reality is that there are many styles of betta fish. Basically, they will be of various colors, and apparently, their tails will greatly differ from each other in form and size. Therefore, a number of them have a crown tail, a half-moon tail, a double tail, and the most common one could be a veil tail.

10 - They are terribly intelligent.

Bettas are the most intelligent fish in the world when compared to other species. Due to this, if you have enough time and patience, you'll be able to train your new pet and teach it to perform certain tricks, like jumping through hoops, jumping for food, and even recognizing you when they are hungry. You've got to admit that this can be very cool.
